Homemade Buttermilk Fried Chicken & Waffles 1D & 5SOS Concert

It all started with me marinating chicken legs, thighs and breasts in buttermilk, onion, garlic, paprika, cayenne, thai chilies, rosemary and a ton more things…  the next day L came over and first he decided to Lion King Didi…

and yes… I sang the song…

Since the buttermilk marinade was wet enough we didn’t use egg but used a mixture of corn starch, wheat flour and whole wheat panko also mixed with spices like cayenne and paprika.

Deep fried in hot oil while we had some beers to pre-game for the concert

After frying the chicken, we dipped some pickles in the cornstarch and made fried pickle chips

Hot sauce and maple syrup over whole wheat waffles and pickle chips!!!!

And of course with some good beer…

After a shot of tequila, off to the 5 Seconds of Summer and One Direction concert!

I drew on my arm…

L let me write on his arm (even tho his fav 1D is Niall)

Since it was all kids, alcohol lines were short!!!!  After beers we decided on margaritas… double fisting!!!

1D Pride

Everyone was doing it so L made me do a picture with a heart.

Such an amazing concert!!!!!

Pre-Eating at No. 9 Park

Our plans from last week got cancelled since I got so sick so M and I rescheduled our Truffle dinner at CLINK for this week. After a long day of work I finally got ready, got pretty, got REALLY hungry and was ready to drive into town for a night of good drinks and good food.

I am Food Ninja, hear me roar…

I parked Valet at the Liberty Hotel since that was one of our ultimate, possibly last, destination of the night… I grabbed a drink at the bar and waited for M to arrive. And then a “short walk” to No.9 Park. SO NOT A SHORT WALK WHEN IT’S FREEZING OUT! Up the hill, down the hill… thank GOD I wore my extra thick long fur jacket hahaha. FREEZING, my nose was snotted up and eyes were tearing up hahahaha FROZEN. As soon as we got in I was like de-frosting.  Got a few ultra strong drinks and got ready to grub.

Customized Cheese Plate

I told them no goat cheeses, and the ones they picked were delicious. My favs were the middle three. I also LOVED the toasted nuts ;] Macadamia nuts. MMMM TOASTY.

Chicken Fried Foie Gras + Waffle

The most AMAZING dish! OMG. This TOTALLY ruined regular Fried Chicken + Waffles for me. I can still smell and taste it.  The butter was SOOO creamy, salty and amazing. The waffle was fluffy and perfect. AMAZING Maple Syrup and that GIANT Perfectly Fried Foie??!! Best dish of the night HANDS DOWN. And we’re just still pre-eating :] Totally ruined the rest of the food of the night for us HAHAH…

Short Ribs & Bone Marrow

Actually have no idea how this showed up on our table… we didn’t order this, But it was good :]  The veggies were so good!!… BONE MARROW!!!

Pretzels with Mayo & Whole Grain Mustard

I’m a sucker for pretzels, obviously… so M knew just what to order.. he knows my tummy so well :] HAHA… these were amazing.. NOM NOM NOM.. tiny bites of yumminess.. the best part is the pretzel skin anyways so little bites make me oh so so happy!

Bone Marrow on everything, Pretzels with everything!!!!
Bone Marrow and Pretzel.. hahaha I have issues :]

AND yes, this was our Pre-Dinner :]

“Some people pre-game, we pre-eat!” – M

We ate so much and for so long we were a TINNNNY bit late to CLINK :] Hehehe SOOO WORTH IT!  The restaurant got a cab for us so we were there in a jiffy!!! YUM! Must return again and get everything else on the menu!

Oh and then there was this moment:

Oh Barbara Lynch, another delicious meal! :]

雞窩 G-WOO

Woke up to have some yummy Taiwanese Egg Crepe [蛋餅] and fruits….

It’s like a scallion egg omelette on a thin thin tortilla-ish crepe :] YUM!

Source: IAmWen on Flickr

….and then after getting ready headed out to get lunch with mommy and daddy..

XOXO to a certain YOU from Taipei ;]

So mommy and daddy were already there since they came from elsewhere.. sitting and already eating [they eat SUPER fast] and they had rice noodles and pig’s blood soup with veggies on the side – I got there late and got a hotpot :] My fav.

Extra extra spicy tomato based broth with seafood and beef and clear noodles – YUM

A nice gooey runny egg… super delicious and creamy – my favorite and only type of yolk I eat… GOOOOP!!!

Daddy saw that they were selling Takoyaki [たこ焼き aka 蛸焼], my fav, and he got a “boat” of them for us to share – they were piping hot. The batter was spiced with delicious herbs and while the octopus was slightly lacking.. only one chunk in each giant ball… they were pretty tasty and goopy on the inside.

Bought some buns and waffles [you’ll see I had mine for a midnite snack tonite] at one of my favorite bakeries…

PIckles Donut?!?!?!

Also bought some of my favorite asian fruit.. a HYBRID only found in Taiwan…

鳳梨釋迦 – a Cherimoya + Pineapple Hybrid aka Atemoya, a whopping 5lbs of amazing delicious juiciness
See that big one on the top? That was the one I bought.. took me forever to eat it lol… ate so much I got nauseous lol SO FREAKING GOOD!!!

Afterwards I headed to the hospital to get my piercing infection checked out… once again I’m in Taiwan, half sick and on tons of meds… woop. At least I’m not on tons of pain medication this time [hehe, pain meds, always a fun time!!!]

I hit up some sports stores to find Daddy + Mommy some workout clothes and then needed a sugar and caffeine recharge…

Alas, after wandering about, I still figured Afternoon Tea was my best bet. Didn’t wanna try anything new. PLUS they had new desserts/cakes on display and on their menu that I HADDDDD to try!!!

Strawberry and Orange Zuccotto Roll Cake

While the banana/kiwi roll is light and fluffy, this cake was chocolatey and dense [but in a good way, definitely not overwhelmingly so] and tons of strawberry and orange pieces in it. YUM!

Black Tea Chiffon Cake

SOOO delicious. The frosting was light and creamy… like a super light whipped cream consistancy and BURSTING with a black tea flavor.  The cake itself was super fluffy and also full of tea flavor and had some walnuts chopped into it. YUM – Nevertheless, I thought that it could’ve used a few layers of creamy tea goodness between layers of the cake.

Condensed Milk Cream and Strawberry Mousse Cake

I had been stuck between this and the chocolate roll above but ended up going for chocolate cuz.. I duno, maybe I’m being hormonal or stressed but whatevz I needed my chocolate but I still NEEDED this. So me being the greedy little fat kid after eating those two pieces I ordered another. It’s my tummy, I do what I want!

[rant about Taiwanese youth deleted. hahahahahha I was tipsy and angry last night when I wrote it… LOL – just annoyed at how superficial and immature ppl can be here.. act your age peeps. kthanks!]

SOOOO back to the food… A few cups of seriously strong espressos later.. [and all those cakes] I headed back to the hotel to refresh… not before stopping by Salad to buy a new short short jean skirt ;] WHICH I ended up changing into for dinner TEEHEE.

Around 630ish or so Mommy, Daddy and I headed to 雞窩 [G-WOO], just a few short blocks away from the hotel I’m staying at… it’s the sister restaurant of 驥園 which is a Sichuan restaurant famous for their clay pot chicken soups… This is the baby sister and is a little more chic, more casual and has a wider range of food…

Bamboo & Fatty Pork Strips w/ Peppers

This was really good.. altho I prefer my bamboo to be a lot thicker cut and these were some of the thinnest I’ve had – almost to the point where it didn’t seem very “bamboo-like” delicious nonetheless and the fatty pork wasn’t too fatty – which is good and bad.  Bamboo is great when paired with a fattier type of meat or in a greasier sauce since it helps get rid of the grease/fat when in your belly :]

Spicy Beef & Tofu Strips w/ Cilantro

Spicy and delicious.  Tender beef, not overcooked, and tons of tender tofu strips. NOM!  Great with rice!  I added extra fresh chili peppers to it since I’m a spicy food fiend ;]

My own bowl of  Vegetarian Fried Rice [炒飯]

Delicious.  And definitely tasted like it was made from fresh rice, not ghetto leftover rice like a lot of restaurants, but then you never know LOL…

五更肠旺 – Spicy Pig’s Blood & Large Intestines w/ Tofu

Chewy pieces of intestines with a little bit of crunch to it.. and creamy blocks of pig’s blood and soft tender tofu…

“五更肠旺 – Wu Geng Chang Wang” [is] a spicy stew with preserved mustard, tofu, pork intestine slices and congealed pork blood cubes.” [Source]

Vegetarian Stir-Fried Noodles [炒麵]

Spicy Clams Sauteed with Basil [炒海瓜子]

Daddy ordered this just for me :] Spicy, basil-y and tender and fresh. I FREAKING LOVE CLAMS!  I ate at least more than half the dish. Sorry. But, lately, I need my clams fix on a daily basis.  I’m some crazy preggno woman. BUT. Not preggo. In order to be preggo you need booty. I ain’t getting any. Haven’t. Hasn’t. And we won’t even talk about getting GOOD booty cuz then this blog will just get depressing.. okay, more food and food pix to drool over.. [btw NO feeling sorry for me. I chose not to get booty cuz I’d rather get no booty than bad booty or random gross booty. KAPEESH? Hi Mom! Hi Dad!] Btw here’s a great Clams recipe.

Salt & Pepper Fried Chicken

Not too salty, not too peppery, good flavor and lightly fried.  Not usually my favorite thing to eat but I had a nice big juicy piece anyways :]

Sauteed Pea Shoots [豆苗/Dau Miu]

The plate was tiny but they were fresh and tasty.  Not greasy at all and cooked to perfection!

Fried Crumbled Soy Beans over Steamed Cod

The balance of textures and flavors were great.. the fish was silky, soft, mild and tender while the crumbled soy beans were a bit crunchy and salty.. YUM!

TOTALLY recreating this and one.. three-uping it, when I go home. Strangely I totally thought this was more of a chilean or butterfish but they said the direct translation was Cod. Didn’t really taste like cod but delicious nonetheless.  I tried to be anorexic and lady like at first but I was hungry dammit so I took two huge portions. :] Fat kid’s gotta eat or she’ll be cranky. SOOO.. yea. ;]

Clam and Ginger Soup

The soup tasted like chicken soup tho, not clam soup.  Which makes sense since both sister restaurants are known for their chicken soups and dishes.. just slightly disappointing but also fine since, even tho the chicken soup was mild, I’ve been having clam/ginger soup almost every day since I’ve been in Taiwan LOL. The clams were so good and juicy and soft and plump.  Not overcooked which is many many thumbs up!

Stir-Fried Tomato with Egg [蕃茄炒蛋]

One of my favorite dishes since childhood.. and I love my mommy’s the bestest.  Great over rice or noodles… I could eat a giant bowl of it by myself.  But I found there’s to be dry and not as “wet” as I’m used to.  I also love it with tons of tomatoes as well as tons of eggs, and scallions.. lots of fresh scallions :]

Soft Tofu with Veggies in Brown Sauce

Fried Shrimp w/ Pineapple and Mayo – 奶油核桃蝦
[but without the Walnuts and Rainbow Sprinkles]

My favorite version of this dish, I’ve mentioned before, which is ALSO like the only time I ever eat mayo and preferably ONLY Kewpie mayo… is Fried Shrimp with Candied Walnuts, Mayo and Rainbow Sprinkles — UUUUUUBER Taiwanese :] Rainbow Sprinkles is KEY!!!!

[Source: Maya83 on Flickr]

酸辣羹 – Hot and Sour Soup

Pouring the Sea Cucumbers Dish over the Sizzling Rice

Sizzling Rice is basically fried uncooked rice which puffs up and is SOOO good…… when it touches something wet it starts popping and literally, “sizzling” YUM – I eat it by itself as a snack all the time – they sell it in snack packs :]

Sea Cucumbers Over Sizzling Rice

Twice Fried Green Beans [乾煸四季豆]

My daddy’s favorite dish, but I still think my mom makes it best!  It’s supposed to be the blacker and “drier” and “flatter” aka the 乾 [dry] and 煸 [flat] the better BUT I still like the way my mom makes it, still twice fried but less fried and still green and pretty [altho the blacker the softer and greasier and deliciousnessssss… hahahaha]

This year for Thanksgiving my mom had made it with chilis which is more of a Sichuan [四川] style  – speaking of which I need to make the Tday 2011 post asap ;] Hahaha.. but the Photo Album is here. and this green beans dish pic is here <3 YUM!

Happy 78th Bday Grandma…

SO why the “80”? Because in Lunar Years she’s turning 79… and we don’t celebrate #9’s in our culture so we always skip to the next number :] SO, 80!

Coffee Brulee Cake

Lots of different candied nuts with a nice tiramisu/brulee type of cake with a light creamy coffee-flavored whipped cream sort of frosting.

The Ding’s [丁家]

I ended the night, not too stressed out, but definitely in need of a drink or two [long long story]… so I headed to the 09 [09倉庫] Whickey & Wine Bar near my hotel…

Delicious Salty Bar Snacks…

A few glasses of a nice Red Cab

And of course a few plates of delicious juicy piping hot Taiwanese Sausage [香腸] with Raw Scallions/Garlic

Other than Black Taiwanese sausage from Lao Yo Ji this is my favorite Taiwanese Sausage to get in Taipei!!!! I have NO idea where they buy it from but it’s the BOMB DIGGITY YO!

And slightly tipsy and whooopdedooooing… came back home to sour straws and my love, my only my Chocolate covered sugary Waffle from earlier today :]

G’nite world, this chica needs to sleep now… she’s running on booze, sugarrrr and pure adrenaline right now ;D

Worst Brunch Ever, Masa

We were SO excited for Masa. Like, REALLY excited. Ok, maybe a lot of it was mainly me….. Unfortunately it wasn’t that good … BOOO.. we got prime parking spot too [hate trying to find parking in South Boston it’s so crowded, esp with the snow and totally lacking in parking spots]

Onwards towards the suckage….

Corn Bread and jams….

Cranberry Preserves, Honey Butter and an Apricot Jam

Corn bread wasn’t bad. Wish it was warm and had a better crust tho… tasted best with the butter… meh…

Chef Phil’s Bloody Marys – Stoli and Pickled Jalapenos

It was OK.. nothing to brag about or really enjoy, I didnt even finish mine….

Our waiter never checked on us and just left us after bringing the bloodys over. LAME.

Nut Crusted Texas Toast Stuffed with Caramelized Bananas
Dulce de Leche Syrup

This is DEEP FRIED. It was disgustingly oily and I couldn’t get over that.. it’s like chewing a sponge of grease. It was deep fried in oil that wasn’t hot enough. When we complained it was oily our waiter, who was a horrible one btw, was just like “well it’s deep fried” OK OBVIOUSLY…. SO disgusting. Just thinking about it now makes me wanna gag… re-gag. Ew.

Santa Fe Style Eggs Benedict Atop Southwestern Biscuits
Avocado, Green Chile Hollandaise and Southwest Home Fries

First time having eggs benedict with no meat in it. The biscuit was meh and the sauce was too lemony and overpowering…. Z liked the potatoes but I only had one  with a bite of everything, all together, nothing special to me. The eggs were perfectly cooked but come on…. thats it… Honestly I didn’t even see [or taste] the avocado *sad*

Corn Cob Smoked Bacon

Ok honestly. These tasted like generic Stop & Shop bacon or something. Thin, salty and just….. meh bacon.

Shrimp and Cheesy Grits with a perfect fried egg and salsa

This was the best dish of the day. And even then it wasn’t that great. Guess it’s hard when it’s got good competition. Wish it was a bit cheesier tho… the yolk was great mixed in with everything though… NOM! I love some good grits… :D

We got the french toast off our check… and I told them their bathroom had an open dirty baby diaper [stunk SOOOOO bad] and we bailed. I was sad. He was sad. We were sad.

I tweeted about the diaper and they were actually really rude and told me to take it off. No please or apologies for my bad experience…. how rude!!!! The funniest part, THEY DELETED the tweets of them being rude.

Soooooo he cheered me up by bringing me to Cabots for ice cream :D What a guy <3

Freshly made waffle with oreo froyo, hot fudge, rainbow sprinkles, whipped cream and a cherry :D DELISH!

Then we went home, watched my favorite romantic movie OBSERVE  & REPORT <3 Hahahaha and we even made some freshly popped popcorn… ate cheese and drank some good Spanish wine :]

I was pretty full for a long time for some reason…. so late late dinner ended up being Taiwan Cafe….

Mommy & Daddy Approved

My parents came up to see the new apartment so I decided to take them to get some tasty food.  My parents are always out to find some good asian food… and at first we were going to go to Flushing and get some Taiwan food… but then decided on some nice xiao long baos and other ShangHai eats in Chinatown… [closer too]

First they dropped Dior off and me and I took her for a walk around town and to play in Bryant Park for awhile…

Another reason why Primehouse is a MUST when you’re in Chicago…

Everytime with PH is like the first time ;D

When you’re in Chicago the your first stop  should be… well the James Hotel cuz you should be staying there bitches ;D…. For three reasons… 1. It’s in the center of everything :] 2. It’s GORGEOUS.. lovely rooms and staff… 3. It’s home of one of the bestest restaurants in Chi….Primehouse… we’ll get to that in a second though…

SO AFTER you’ve settled in… put on your best shoes and head over to Primehouse [if you’re NOT staying at the James Hotel, I forgive you but you need to get a drink at  J Bar and eat some of their truffle chocolate popcorn… MUST, got it? So get there early and mingle…have a glass of champagne or two [they have great cocktails as well] and then get ready to eat [and drink] your heart out.

Me all dressed up and ready to eat [I gots my gameface on] in our GORGEOUS suite at the James…

After sitting us down [the place was packed] and being welcomed back [yay they remember me!!!] we met out waitress, Heather, our sommelier for the night [Ms. Rachael Johnson Hussar] and I got to catch up with the most awesome Chef Rick Gresh – Exec Chef at PH :]

Baconfest Chicago 2010

The shirt I picked to wear to BACONFEST… I thought it was hilarious.

Well it was funny until on one of the tv interviews we did…. the guy asked me if I was a vegetarian. No, seriously. He asked me if I was a vegetarian….. okay… end rant… cuz I’m too excited to talk about BaconFest :D Yep, so now, back to BaconFest….

Yes, My travel buddy and I traveled from the East Coast to the… errr.. Mid…dle North Part of America… just to come to BaconFest[well and for me to see Rick and Carlos, but that’s for the next entry or so… AND I wanted to show my buddy-in-crime just why Chi-town was so awesome… esp in their food scene] but going to BaconFest was highly motivating.

Waterzooi 3x in a week.. aka Beer and Mussels x 100

… that’s more times than some couples have sex ;D Hahahahaha…. anyways… This place has been circling my brain ever since I read about all the Beer and Mussel madness… lol…

Sunday we decided to finally go to the Belgian Bistro, Waterzooi [sister resto and right next door to Novita, Wine Bar],…. and since we had some delicious Italian earlier [but til late] on in the day so we ended up going here at around 9pm…

Sunday Late Night Dinner

We ended up getting two other beers, but this was our favorite of the three so we ended up getting two of these

Charcuterie, Duck Rillettes, Foie Gras Mousse, Cured Sausage, Classic Accrutrements

Bambino . The Country Life

Over the weekend we headed up to the mountains in Taichung [臺中] to eat at Bambino…  a little hidden cottage in the countryside. It was my mom, three aunts and me :D A girls’ day in Taichung! So lets backtrack a bit before we get to the good stuff….

After some shopping and breakfast and coffee [yes people in my family…. well, us ladies are ALWAYS eating…]

First we headed to a delicious little japanese sushi shop.

Sashimi & the most delicious Japanese style salad ever…

The Last Meal…

When I was younger, the inner party queen in me was centered around how I was going to end my year at which party. The best celeb guest/host, music, festivities, etc… was what I planned my NYE around. This year was different… in a few ways.

1. I didn’t plan it :]
2. It was centered around a meal.
3. Which party I went to didn’t really matter [we had tickets to Cain Luxe btw]

Let me continue. I was surprised with dinner reservations to Daniel. Yes, THE Daniel Boulud‘s Daniel. If you don’t know who he is, shame on you.
