“…so what now???”

I was asked this tonight, during dinner. What do I want now?….

Let’s first talk about what we ate tonight…. we were at The Local, one of my favorites in my area, which I’m sure you have heard me rage about on my facebook, twitter, and probably even on here (although I don’t do quite as many food posts on here anymore)

We started off with the Salt & Pepper Calamari with pickled peppers, ginger salsa, and cilantro…. which was delicious! I kind of wish they didn’t have the sauce on the bottom of the plate though which makes some of it kind of soggy after awhile.  But the plate was HUGE!  They have really upped their portion sizes since they first opened!

We also had the Roasted Garlic Hummus with “garden vegetables” (today was just carrots and cucumber slices) and grilled pita (which definitely had cardamom in it – which gave it a super “Indian” feel…)  Delicious as usual… just too much EVOO and herbs/garlic in the middle of the hummus, which, I personally stayed clear from.  The hummus was rich, yummy and garlicky enough as it was.

It was quite tasty…. I love hummus myself, so I was enjoying it like a mofo.  Plus I love carrots and recently found a love again for cucumbers…I think it’s the way they sliced it.

Then came our entrees.  My lovely lady date got the Herb-Marinated Half Chicken that came with garlic mashed potatoes and over sautéed spinach – which I have had before, so I highly recommended it.  It was loved.  Everything was perfectly seasoned – but, like I said, a HUGE portion.  Seemed a whole lot larger than the last time I got it.

I was craving beef… and I’ve had the short ribs and the steak tips and the salads with the steak so I noticed they had something new… a Chimichurri Skirt Steak on top of braised kale with steak-cut sweet potato fries.  The steak, while I got it ‘medium rare’ was still cooked medium/medium-well.  Which is why I always ask for things rare to medium rare, or else you’ll just get it well-done and overcooked.

The steak was delicious, as was the chimichurri, though I felt it could’ve been more present – it was pretty…. not “bland” but light. Present, but not really there.  The kale though, tasted overpowering and the salt was just crunching through…. wasn’t my fav.  I stole some spinach from the chicken dish instead.  My dinner date wasn’t too big of a fan of the kale either.  Meh.

[ps. for a nice chimichurri sauce check out Bon Appétit – my fav goto place for inspiration]

I got a nice Californian Cabernet Sauvignon [Red, duh] which took me forever to sip on. Strangely so. [I’ve been cutting down on my alcohol so it doesn’t take much lately]

So  now back to the question…. what am I …. wait what?  I think I’m tipsy now.

Ohhhh so what NOW?!  What now????  After what?  “After taking a chance at love and moving to another country and coming back, so soon after, broken hearted”?  Well, I take that and I continue on. [BTW have you noticed how awesome my hair is? Yay for my new waves/curls]

I can say that I went to another country with full on intentions of nothing but the best… and yes I came home, a bit sad.  I wouldn’t call myself broken.  I’ve been broken so many times, it’s more about who can piece me back together, has the patience to, now, than to say who broke me apart.  How do  you break when you’re already broken?

Am I just damaged goods?

I don’t think so.  I just think that the one who should be with me hasn’t realized it yet.  Or found me yet?! Who knows.  I hope it’s…

… does it even matter who I say, unless it’s mutual?!

So there it is.  A splendid  dinner and a so-so answer to the question asked.

Buenos Noches mis Amores <3

The Spotted Pig

So ya’ll know about the book… WHICH IS AMAZING, I got it as soon as it got out. GET IT.

Now let’s talk about her food.. it was a beautiful Saturday so after walking all the way from the edge of FiDi…. all the way to almost Times Sq..

First by the waters… and then we decided to walk on the HighLine since I’ve never been…. We walked all the way to the end… and then went down to Gastro Market for a few beers. Ahhh beergardens.

I don’t remember what they were except they were in caskets and red ales.

We ended up walking to the The Spotted Pig RIGHT before the big dinner rush. Phew. Last two seats at the bar. Booyeah!

I was surprised at how little pork items were actually ON the menu. Come on.. Spotted Pig? We need a full on all out pigged out menu….

Pork Rillette with Pickles & Mustard

What could go wrong with pork topped off with lardo?!.. You don’t even need the grainy mustard on the side….. just a huge scoop of the lardo and pork from the rillette on top of the perfectly grilled crostini… toasty fresh… and you’re good.  The pickled gherkins and pearl onions were a nice touch…

Crispy Pig’s Ear Salad with Lemon Caper Dressing

This was the first thing I saw on the menu and I KNEW I had to get it.  I was surprised that it was a whole pig’s ear… unless it’s connected to the head still, I’m used to eating it cut into thin strips.  The pig’s ear was crispy, not greasy at all, and paired lovely with the refreshing salad of mixed greens, endive and italian parsley underneath.

Grilled Skirt Steak with Roasted Beets & Horseradish Cream

J shared this with me. AMAZING horseradish butter and simple braised beets and beet greens. Delicious. We weren’t asked how we wanted it to be cooked but it was cooked to a beautiful medium rare, on the rare side. YUM. Buttery meat.

Prosciutto & Ricotta Tart with Marjoram

This was an appetizer but I got it as my main to share with J.  A flakey crisp tart topped with prosciutto, risotto, greens and shavings of parm. DELICIOUS.

And of course, a very much needed – and always necessary side dish

Roasted Brussels Sprouts

These literally melted in your mouth.  Most definitely NOT good for you but sooooo delicious.

I kinda wish we got the burger as well, it’s supposed to be awesome and I saw a TON of people order it.

Afterwards we ended up at Proletariat for beers….. and PRETZEL BREAD

The stout cheese dip was meh….. it was all about the curry mustard sauce!!!!

Met up with a few friends and ended up at Dive Bar Lucy’s..

Great times.

T is for Tuesday and Takashi but not Four Loko

When I say Takashi, you think of???…. First Stomachs, Second Stomachs…. Hearts, Livers, Tongues, etc :D For the longest time I’ve been hearing Z talk about this place. Nom nom nom, and this kobe beef uni sashimi appetizer. SO. It only seemed normal that we finally make it out here to this cute little bbq eatery.

We were offered a place at the bar but I refused to NOT sit at the table. Hahaha, so we got a table ;D

This weird suction thingie for the grill freaked me out, it also bothered me because when you start grilling, they pull it down [I guess to suck the hot air out – still hot tho] AND if you sit in the middle facing each other, you can’t see each other’s faces. So I ended up sitting diagonally so I could actually SEE Z’s face while we talked. FAIL!

Free munchies while we BROOOOOOOOOWSED the menu
Cabbage “salad”, Peanut Bean Sprouts, Kimchi

Best part of the menu:
Korean Soju “Not for the faint of heart” Seriously? I must have a strong heart then. I love soju. But HELLO, Japanese eatery, we got creamy unfiltered sake :D And I kept getting flower petals in mine….

I loved that it was “pick your cup” – I was confused between this pink one and a sparkly crystal one, but of course PINK FTW!

(flash-boiled shredded achilles tendon)

The tendon was cut into too small of bites and was super crunchy. It was good but I like chewy soft large pieces of tendon. The flavors were great but the texture wasn’t my favorite – especially since they were so hard to pick up with my chopsticks. It was like eating tendon rice.

(thinly-sliced chuck eye tartare in special sauce)

I’ve been craving a good tartare and this was delicious. DEEERRRICIOUS as a fob would say [cough* the girls sitting next to us aka FOB CENTRAL] ANYWAYS. This was sooo clean tasting and I loved the size and texture of the beef. AMAZING. Light and just, FLUFFFYYYY okay, not fluffy as in “fluffy” but fluffy as in FREAKING AMAZING. [I watch too much Despicable Me]

And then came the dish that makes Z’s world go round…

(chuck flap topped with sea urchin and fresh wasabi)

Delicious raw beef sashimi with a HUGE delicious sweetass helping of Uni on top. A little wasabi and a quick dunk in the soy sauce and nom nom away with the seaweed and shiso leaf. I wish you could taste the beef more but it’s just creamy melt in your mouth happy pleasure. The shiso and the uni totally take over the flavors – but the crunch of the seaweed and the chew of the beef really help it last :]

The soup for the Shabu getting hot and our sauces being served to us…..

Fresh vegetables

(includes special miso mayo)

Z had fun trying to grill radishes.. but they’re so much better just fresh. I ate them with my grilled meats and innards while Z would use the shabu to steam them :] He did grill the hot chillis which gave it a nice char taste to it – yum.

Akasen (fourth stomach)

I think these were my favorite of the night. SO fatty and chewy it was SOOOO freaking delicious. You need to cook this well until it looks like a nice char on both sides, but SO worth the wait – AMAZING.

Shibire (sweetbreads)

These were creamy and so delicious. We cooked them until they were crisp on the outside and just melt in your mouth creamy on the inside.

Tang shabu (tongue hotpot)

I think I still prefer my tongue grilled, but these tongues were SO super fresh, thinly sliced and very very tender — we just flash-boiled them really quick and ate them with some sauce and scallions.

Scallion vinaigrette

You have to order this seperately but it tastes SO good with tongue.Or well, with anything, I’m obsessed with scallions and while the vinaigrette is a little sweet, I love how plentiful of scallions they gave you – freaking scallion salad <3

Harami (outside skirt)
Nothing like a good skirt steak.

*SPECIAL: Beef Belly

These were SO fatty and juicy – I’m SO glad I saw it on the little flap of paper that said specials of the day…Z totally missed it – phew. I will NEVER pass up anything belly. Fish belly, Pork belly…. BEEF belly.. :D Best belly :D Can you believe our server told us to cook these medium? Hahaha…. like Z would ever listen.

Tsurami (cheek)

Cheek meat is amazing, haven’t you had fish cheeks? Pig cheeks? Cow cheeks are the same. Tender, fatty, juicy and derrrricious :D

He was behind me, creeper

We could’ve eaten more, we both know that, but why be disgustingly full when you can be happy and still moveable even after all that meat?!… so we walked…

We ended the night by taking a walk to Grom… along the way we found these:

Half Baci [my choice] Half Creme di Grom [his choice] AMAZING – I could’ve eaten a tub.. but I guess I need to start watching my figure, ain’t getting any younger….. hahaha.. so we shared a medium cup.

BTW, Four Loko Scrabble is probably not the “SMARTEST” drinking game to play…. so hard to think of words after a few….

Meatopia 2010

I got VIP tickets to Meatopia last Sunday [July 11] which took place on Governor’s Island – just a short 5 minute ferry ride away! I was still a little boozy from the day before of champagne  :]…. but sooo hungry for meat!!! I was surprised that we could only have a certain amount of tastings… each tasting had to get checked off.. good thing some of the chefs just didn’t care about that –  come on, it’s all about the food :] So we got to try everything – even if we couldn’t we had 24 tastings between the two of us so it would’ve worked out either way.

Sea of Barbeque

1. Chris Hart / I-Que BBQ

Competition Style Pork Shoulder

SO SO SO tasty. The bbq sauce was soooo good, light but so full of flavor with a hint of sweet… the meat had some fat and crust to it… melt in your mouth. As soon as I turned around after a small bite, R ate it ALL :[ WAAAA…

Another sexy view of the pork.. sooooo freaking yum.

This time when I ordered I said I was allergic to nuts to see what they gave me and instead of my fav spicy lemonade they gave me a fruity pineapple/apple/mint one. Tasty. I really need to stop buying these tho…. and use my vitamix more.
