In the mood for Thai…

You know how I roll… I eat, day by day, on a “what I’m in the mood for” basis… sometimes it’s Ramen… sometimes 1$ pizza… sometimes I wanna go all out…  but this Thursday afternoon:

THAI!!!!

So my partner [and also Thai-craving] in crime ended up getting the 15 Course Tasting from Kittichai – we were warned that it was a lot of food, but instead of getting scared, we ordered a few more dishes.. and even ended up ordering a few more desserts ;D You know how I roll…. anyways the dishes were brought out and wine paired into 5 sets…. 2 apps, 2 entrees and a dessert :D

** Set One: Appetizers **

Paired with: Rosè, Charles Lafitte, Brut N.V., Listel


Delish.. I ended up ordering more later on with dessert :D You know I adore my bubbly…

Sashimi of Hamachi, Squid Ink Salt, Red Holland Pepper Dressing
So fresh and clear tasting. The dressing was great and not too heavy AT ALL and there was some basil hidden underneath to eat with each slice. AMAZING.

THOD MUN PLA —
Kittichai Fish Cakes with Cucumber and Red Onion Chutney


These were sooo amazing. I have to admit I was hesitant at first to try this… but the crunch puffed rice outside and the layers of textures and flavors on the inside.. def one of the best fishcakes I’ve ever had.

Green Papaya and Mango Salad with Dried Shrimp and Chili Cashew Dressing

Delish and full of flavor. I LOVE LOVE papaya salad, although I wish there was heat in the dish – usually I have SPICY SPICY papaya salad but this had no heat at all :[

** Added On: YUM SUM O —
Pomelo Salad, Chili Glazed Shrimp, Roasted Cashew on Shiso Leaf


A little on the salty side but I adore Shiso leaf and more people should know that you can eat these things they place sushi on at Japanese places :D

Chocolate Baby Back Ribs with Thai Spices

FUCKING FANTABULOUS.

They were actually rich an d chocolatey. Not just like a mole or something that doesn’t TASTE like chocolate, this DID, a nice dark chocolate but it wasn’t gross or desserty or sweet. This was SOOOO GOOD.. and the meat was just fall off the bone amazing.

Loving it.


So so SO loving it.

Banana Blossom and Artichoke Salad, Roasted Cashew Nuts and Chili Jam

Seperately it would have been good but altogether it was too much going on.  I’m not a fan of dishes where I can’t tell what is what. I couldn’t taste artichoke — I still don’t get why people hide artichokes with heavy flavors when it’s so delicious and distinctive on it’s on — and I couldn’t tell the difference between the banana blossom and the choke… all mushy… and too much sauce :T R ate it all tho hehehehe….

Northern Thai Beef Salad, Chinese Long Beans and Roasted Sticky Rice Powder

The rice powder added a nice smooth texture that really held the salad together. LOVED it, it was soooo good.. the beef was tender and just full of flavor, I devoured most of it hahaha…

** Set Three: Entrees **

Paired with: Chardonnay, Estrada Creek Vineyard, California 2007

Thai Seafood Bouillabaisse with Tiger Prawns, Scallops and Mussels

Flavorful and amazing. The shrimp was covered in something pretty salty but the soup and everything was great.

Baked Chilean Sea Bass Marinated in Yellow Salted Beans with Morning Glory

Tender and buttery and falling apart. The outside was too saucey and sweet for me but the innards, YUM…. also they had kong shin tsai [my favorite]

** Added On: PUURK THAOD —
Crispy Taro Root Croquettes, Sweet-Spicy Dipping Sauce


OMG. These were soooo goood…. who needs potatoes when you can have taro, so much more creamy and flavorful and delish.. with a slight texture to it… a nice purple twinge… and just amazing.


These were crunchy on the outside and just melt in your mouth creamy, with a slightly nutty taste, on the inside.

PAD KANAH — Sautèed Gai-Lan with Garlic and Ginger

YUM YUM.. Gai-Lan is one of my favorite veggies :D Light and yummy and crunchy YAY

** Set Four: Entrees **

Paired with: Cabernet Sauvignon, Domaine de La Réaltière “Flore”, Provence 2006

Pineapple-Braised Short Ribs in Green Curry, Thai Eggplant and Sweet Basil

Falling apart yummy. I LOOOOVED the green curry, omgomgomgomg, soooo goooood… I ended up dipping the broiled chicken into the sauce too…

Broiled Chicken Coconut Chicken Breast, Wok Fried Choy Sum

Too much of this coconut sauce for me and I preferred dipping it into the green curry because the chicken was slightly bland.

PHA PAUK SAI KING —
Stir-Fried Asian Vegetables with Garlic and Ginger-Soy Sauce


YAY for bambooooooooo and more gai-lan and other yummy veggies…

KHAO SUEY — Steamed Jasmine Rice

You gotta a have your rice….

** Set Five: Desserts **

Paired with: 10yr Old Tawny, Casa de Santa Eufemia, Port

Banana Spring Rolls with Burnt Honey Ice Cream

Absolutely AMAZING. The ice cream was just SOOO great… love love love…. not too sweet either. The spring rolls were fried but so light and banana-y. LOVES.

Flourless Valrhona Chocolate Cake with Fresh Cream

You would expect a dense brownie like cake but this just melted in my mouth like a meringue.

** Added on: Coconut Crepes with Warm Kalamanci Sauce

Amazing :] Love the citrus

** Added on: Jasmine Flan on a Sweet and Sour Fruit Salad with Jasmine Rice Ice Cream

This flan was just… YUM. IN LOVE. And the jasmine rice ice cream was just as yum. both were just SOOO.. light and just dreamily creamy. Hehe and I loved the crunch pizzelle it came with :D

** Added on: Sankaya Pandan-Valrhona White Chocolate Sauce with Seasonal Fruit

The chocolate was sooo goooood.. that green color looks like lime food coloring but it’s actually a NATURAL color from the thai vanilla bean ;D

Big thanks to our gorgeous waitress, Mia, for putting up with us and our millions of dishes :] She was so surprised we finished EVERYTHING… every plate LICKED CLEAN… :D

  1. i can barely remember what i had when i went to kittichai, its been, i think probably a million years ago with my first bf, and we thought we were so cool, chic, and sophisticated because we were having ASIAN FUUUUUUUUUSION. (yep, and i said it just like that!)

    i didn’t really like eating back then (can you imagine!?!) and i thought the whole experience was so weird! weird unusual flavors and combinations… asian is supposed to be like the way momma makes it!
