Crú – Sometimes you just want Wine and Cheese for Dinner

Since we had a super late – and carb-festing – breakfast/lunch/brunch at Snooze Sunday [um, 3pm?] we decided to take it easy on dinner and just grab a few snackies…. so whereelse but a nice little wine bar?

We headed back to Larimer Sq. – right across the street from Rioja – for  Crú [a wine bar]

We had 9pm reservations… but got there about 10 minutes beforehand…. the kitchen was just about to close so we quickly ordered over indulgence of delicious cheeses as our dinner :] They were a little slow at first for taking our orders but as soon as we finally got their attention they were a lot more attentive.

Chef’s Pick Cheese Flight

  • Cashel Blue – Made from pasteurized whole miklk from Friesian cows, this mellow blue flavor doesn’t overpower.
  • Testun Ciuc – “Drunken” a unique cheese from Piedmont, this cheese is aged inside a Barolo wine cask.  It’s bold, tangy and slightly grape-y.
  • Pecorino Brillo – Aged for 4 months then washed and placed in pitchers of Tuscan wine for an additional month.
  • Robiola – An Italian cow’s milk cheese, soft ripened, mild, buttery, with sweet hints of mushroom [we added this one from the Sinful Experience Cheese Flight]

The Testun Ciuc was the favorite of the night. It had a delicious liquor, almost rum tasting sweetness to it. And with the Penfolds Syrah it really brought out all the nuttiness of the cheese. I need a block of this in my fridge at all times. kThanx.

The Cashel Blue tasted great with the Arowood Syrah [really cut the pungent-ness of it]… loved the spicy wine with it.

Classic Cheese Flight

  • Neal’s Yard Dairy Colston Basset Stilton – English, aged up to 15 weeks.  Mellow yet tangy & creamy.
  • Crave Brothers Petit Frere – Similar to a Camembert in style.  This cheese is pungent and multi-layered in flavor.  Made with farm fresh cow’s milk.  A connoisseur’s cheese if there ever was one.
  • Manchego – Spanish, zesty & exuberant sheep’s ilk, firm & dry.

I absolutely LOOOVED the Petit Frere and the Manchego. Nibble nibble nibble. I was gnawing on the Petit Frere for the rest of the night :] The Petit was also really good with the Penfolds Syrah… and the Manchego was amazing with the Saracina Vineyards Syrah!!!

Delicious Breads and Flatbreads for our cheeses… we pretty much ate ALL of this… omg what a carb fest ;D

Our cute little mini cleavers that came with our cheese plates.

3 Cheese Fondue with White Truffle Oil
Apple, Pear, Carrot, Green Bean & Rustic Bread

DELICIOUS. It was a little bit thinner at first but as it slowly cooked down it got thicker and more and more flavorful. I ended up eating the crust of the brown grains bread with the fondue. Delicious. Loved the green beans and carrots on the side. We ended up dipping the grapes in as well. YUM!

Fried Brie
Honey & Black Peppercorns

It was a little too strong of a brie for me but I loved the sweetness and the surprise of the peppercorns with it.  It would’ve been better with less brie in the middle.
