What Sushi should be…

The other week after catching Bruno, boyfriend and I were craving sushi (like always) We’re both really pick with our sushi.. but we’re also kind of lazy so instead of planning ahead of time, we had passed two sushi places on the way to the movies & Fox+Obel (omg my fav place ever now) so after comparing the menus… we chose Oy Sy over Niu.

Sigh. It left me wanting and slightly disappointed.

Oy Sy… loved Mizu soooo much more (see review of Mizu under the cut!!!)

Seaweed Salad

Octopus Salad w/ Lime Dressing

Toro Tartare with Caviar

Sashimi

White Tuna, Scallop, Salmon, Hamachi

Salmon Skin Handroll

Salmon Skin = BEST EVER!!!

Hamachi Handroll

Chicago Crazy Maki

Tuna, salmon, yellowtail, kani kama, masago, cucumber, lettuce and avocado

Ruby Maki

Tuna, avocado and spicy sauce and chili tobiko

Dynamite Maki

Radish sprouts, shrimp, squid, octopus, scallop, kani kama, avocado and masago in spicy sauce

Summer Maki

Masago, tuna, yellowtail, cilantro, avocado, green pepper, chili oil, spicy sauce, lime juice

I don’t think I’d go back unless it was to eat a couple of the salmon skin handrolls…

This Saturday (yesterday) we went to the Green City Market farmer’s market for some browsing of the stands.. and some good food… on the way there we realized that Mizu was RIGHT THERE. SO… tonite we went back there for dinner.

What I thought Oy Sy should’ve been but 10x better.

OMG. DELICIOUS!!!!

To start off… I decided to ball out with the sake

This 98$ bottle of “Tipsy Heaven Delight” better taste like heaven.. and it did, but it didn’t really make me tipsy

First the yakitori:

Added flavorings…

Beef Tongue Yakitori

Tender… delicious.. thin

Octopus Yakitori

Duck Breast Yakitori

Scallop Yakitori

Perfectly cooked.. tender, fresh and juicy

We also ordered Chicken Tail Yakitori but they were out :[

Hamachi Carpaccio

Nice thick slices of hamachi… not overpowered by the flavorings around it, but just perfectly balanced.

Layered Tuna Tartar

It’s avocado pureed with tofu… then some mango salsa and then fresh tuna.. with slightly sweetened wonton chips

SO FREAKING DELICIOUS! There was cilantro and it wasn’t even overpowering. The tomatoes.. a little jalapeno, shallots… mmm the mango salsa was so perfectly balanced with the creamy avocado and the chunks of tuna. YUM!

Scallop + Salmon Sashimi

Tuna Tako Maki

Spicy Octopus with Tuna… fav roll of the night

Salmon Skin Maki

A bit too much rice and I’d like more salmon skin, but tasty nonetheless…

Sunkist Maki

Grilled Spicy Salmon with Salmon and a slice of lemon… I loved the little punch of lemon that added so much to the fish… I thought this roll needed a bit of crunch with all that cooked salmon in the middle… and usually I don’t like cooked salmon in sushi.. but this was so good… not fishy… and not heavy at all.

Island Shrimp Maki

Deliciously light shrimp tempura.. super meaty with mango and a light wasabi mayo drizzled on top. I’m not a fan of mayos.. but this was delish!

Dinner was amazing but left both of us still hungry (we’re fat like that) but I totally want to go back for their special – which you have to reserve a week in advance.

OkΒ  it’s late and I should sleep so maybe I’ll write more tomorrow.. or just post another entry :] Gonna be posting up more tastespotting entries tmw too… my sushi ones came out so sexyyyy *loves*

  2. Sushi Para II = the best ever (all you can eat!) and the quality of the fish is tiptop! Only thing good at Oysy is the agedashi tofu and it’s cooked! =0

  3. Sushi Para [II] is good for feasting but it isn’t great or a genuine experience. It’s a place to party and stuff your face. If you want a real Japanese experience, best service, something more than fish and rice, an intimate bar, kaiseki, or a place where you can hear the beautiful woman in front of you– do Mizu. I’m just sayin…
